background
A showcase for VMware’s VMWorld
In preparation for VMWorld, a global conference for virtualization and cloud computing, hosted by our client, VMware, we were asked to demonstrate innovative use cases involving complementary end-to-end solutions showcasing a variety of technologies enabled by the power of virtualization.
This was a proof-of-concept designed for VMware, a technology company that specializes in virtualization software & cloud infrastructure. The design compositions below illustrate the user experience from a campus visitor's perspective, the user experience as an employee using the application to locate meeting rooms and correspond with colleagues, and the user experience for a facilities manager that is responsible for tracking maintenance and parking utilization on campus.

Persona development
We had three main personas to help us tell the story for the parking lot experience, meeting experience and facility management experience.

Creating stories for our personas through user flows
User flows were created to provide the stories that map to the personas and utilized as a way for our team to understand the technological touchpoints within each experience. The user flows also served as a tool in estimating screens and the effort for design.

Designing campus experiences
Parking lot experience
Considering all the possibilities of the Internet of Things with parking sensors in parking structures or sensors at campus entrances, the parking lot experience illustrates a user's experience when visiting the campus for the first time. In this scenario, Pedro Montana, our visitor, has arrived on campus for an interview and needs to navigate to the assigned parking location, reserved for interview candidates, and make his way to the correct building for his interview.
Employee and visitor experience
As an employee working on campus, it's important to keep productivity levels high, which can mean staying ahead of candidate interview meetings or locating a colleague on campus for a quick conversation.
Facilities manager experience
On the other side of the spectrum, there is a significant user base whose main job is keeping up with maintenance on and around campus - these are the facilities managers. The facilities manager experience illustrates the different areas that can be built into the app for such a role and how it aligns to the technologies that connect to the employee and visitor experience.
